**[Felipe Gomez](https://www.cohart.com/felipegomez/profile)** is a multimedia artist originally from Bogotá, Colombia. His journey into art began after a year in the tech industry, where, despite following the traditional path of earning a degree and landing a tech job, he realized his true passion lay elsewhere. Gomez embraced the art world full-throttle and hasn’t looked back since. Best known for his layered wood sculptures and wall pieces, Gomez tells compelling stories through shape, geometry, and perspective, creating works that invite viewers to explore depth and meaning.

##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use?

My process starts with research. Depending on the concept, I spend time reading, gathering information, and sketching ideas before diving into the actual work. Once I’m happy with my drawings, I move on to cutting, staining, gluing, varnishing, and framing the piece. I primarily work with birch wood, using a laser cutter for precision. Depending on the piece, I incorporate other mediums like acrylics, oil paint, or gouache to bring the work to life. This hands-on approach, combined with my layered techniques, allows me to create pieces that feel deeply connected to both craftsmanship and storytelling.  

##### What themes or concepts are you most passionate about exploring in your work?

Lately, I’ve been drawn to abstraction and three-dimensional space—thinking deeply about how we create spaces and the impact they have on us. My work often explores the intersection of nature and human experience, blending surrealism and realism with structural elegance. This reflects my personal journey from the tech world to the art world. Each piece invites viewers to challenge their perceptions and engage in a dialogue, inspiring contemplation through imagery. My exploration of space and its impact on us often translates into how I layer my materials or use light and shadow. Working with wood allows me to incorporate natural elements into these reflections, creating a tactile connection to the organic world while exploring abstraction.

##### How do your personal experiences influence your art?

Everyday experiences are at the core of my work. Conversations, interactions, studies, and my environment constantly influence what I create. I’m always reflecting on what’s happening in the world—whether it’s developments in science, technology, culture, or the geopolitical landscape. For instance, my conversations about current events inspired a piece where I juxtaposed organic materials with sharp, geometric designs, reflecting the tension and harmony between humanity and innovation.

##### Who are some of your biggest artistic influences, and how have they shaped your practice?

Many artists have inspired me, including Louise Nevelson, Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson, and Alexander Calder. Others like El Mac, Hélio Bray, and Daniel Popper have also left a significant mark on me. These artists have pushed boundaries in their own unique ways, and they all share one trait that resonates deeply with me: curiosity. Their work has encouraged me to think bigger, embrace bold ideas, and approach my art with the same fearless exploration that defines their practices.

##### What role does collaboration play in your work? Have you collaborated with other artists or disciplines?

Collaboration isn’t a structural part of my process, but I’ve enjoyed it when the opportunity arises. The medium often dictates how accessible collaboration is, and I’ve worked with others on a handful of projects. I’m looking forward to exploring a few collaborative ideas with friends in the near future. When I’ve collaborated with others, it’s often brought a fresh perspective or pushed me to consider mediums or approaches I might not have explored on my own. For example, working on public art projects with other disciplines has taught me to think beyond the individual piece and consider how my art interacts with communities and environments.

##### How do you define success as an artist? What does it look like for you?

As my career evolves, so does my definition of success. For me, it’s about having the ability to keep creating and pushing my ideas forward. A friend once said, “You’re making it when you’re making it,” and that has stuck with me. Success isn’t a destination; it’s about staying engaged in the process. It ends only when you stop creating. This evolving definition keeps me grounded. It reminds me that the joy is in the work itself, and that success isn’t just about milestones, but about continually challenging myself to grow as an artist and as a person.

##### Can you share a specific project or piece that holds special significance for you? Why is it important?

A piece that will always hold a special place in my heart is _Divine Edification_. I created it during the three months after leaving my corporate job. That was a pivotal moment for me—I saved enough for three months of rent, set up an art studio in my garage, and went all-in on being a full-time artist. It was my first major sale and marked the start of my artistic career. It’s a constant reminder of the leap of faith that brought me here. It also became a personal symbol of resilience, proving to me that passion and determination can carve out new paths.

##### How do you engage with your audience, and what do you hope they take away from your work?

I primarily connect with my audience through Instagram, where I share stories about my day-to-day process. This gives people a behind-the-scenes look at how I create. Beyond social media, I occasionally host events at my studio, attend gallery shows, and interact with people through my newsletter. My hope is that my work inspires curiosity and introspection, leaving people with a sense of connection to something deeper.

One of the most rewarding experiences was during a studio event, when a viewer shared how one of my pieces reminded them of their own struggles and challenges. They broke into tears, and were reminded of the power of finding themselves as a woman and living in their highest self. Moments like these reaffirm the power of art to create personal and emotional connections.

##### What challenges have you faced in your artistic career, and how have you overcome them?

Every new project brings its own set of challenges, just like the artistic journey itself. Early on, the hardest part was finding and refining my style—a process that never really ends. As artists, we’re always evolving, and that’s part of the beauty of it. Hitting milestones like getting gallery representation, landing a public art piece, or winning grants comes down to one thing: dedication and hard work. It’s the constant effort that keeps me moving forward. Facing challenges has taught me resilience and adaptability, two qualities that are as important to art as creativity itself. Every obstacle has been a lesson in patience and problem-solving, which ultimately feeds back into my process.

##### In what ways (if any) do you think art can contribute to social change or address current issues in society?

Art has always been a powerful tool for social change. My background in philosophy, especially studying the philosophy of art, has taught me that art has a unique ability to connect with people on a profound level. While not all art needs to address current events, its capacity to evoke emotions, spark dialogue, and inspire action is undeniable. Thinkers like Theodor Adorno from the Frankfurt School have deeply influenced my view on this. Adorno argued that art, in its ability to disrupt the status quo, could serve as a form of resistance against systems of oppression. This resonates with me—art doesn’t just reflect the world; it can challenge and reshape it. For example, my own work, though not always overtly political, often examines the interplay between structure and humanity, inviting viewers to reconsider their relationship with the spaces they inhabit. This reflective process, in itself, can plant seeds for change.
