Everyone’s talking about the art market slowing down. Auction houses are missing estimates, mega-galleries are reporting thinner sales, the headlines are all the same. But here’s what caught my attention: the smallest galleries, the ones working with early-career artists and bringing in under $250,000 a year, actually grew by 17% last year. That flips the story. The top is shaky, but the base is moving.

I’m not an economist, I’m an artist. I keep an eye on this stuff, and it’s clear the weight is shifting downward, toward the artists and spaces once treated like the margins. Call it “emerging” if you want, but right now it feels more like the center of the conversation.

Big galleries see it too. They’re scooping up younger artists earlier and earlier, trying to lock in voices before they’ve even had a chance to take a breath. Sometimes that looks like opportunity, but it can also be brutal. I’ve seen careers spike after one sold-out fair, and then the pressure sets in, make more, make it faster, don’t lose momentum. That’s not sustainable. That’s speculation dressed up as success.

Collectors are shifting too. The report called it a turn toward “conviction.” In plain terms: people want to buy art that feels like it actually matters, not just something trending on Instagram. And honestly? Conviction isn’t born in auction rooms. It’s in the small studios, the storefront shows, the artists hustling in spaces that never make headlines.

So maybe “emerging” isn’t the right word anymore. Or at least not “less than.” If the so-called bottom is growing while the top contracts, then maybe we’ve been looking at the pyramid upside down. Maybe the energy has always started at the base and the top is just the echo.

Blue-chip sales will always grab the spotlight because dollar signs make good copy. But the cultural engine, the thing that keeps art alive, is running somewhere else. I think of the younger artists I know here in Baltimore and even in smaller cities that the market doesn’t even bother to map. Their work is raw, complicated, sometimes messy, but it’s the kind of work that stays with you. And slowly, collectors are realizing that meaning outlasts hype.

That shift matters. For too long, power sat at the peak while everyone else got crumbs. But cracks are showing, and the strength now is in the breadth, connections, reach, conviction, not just height.

That gives me some optimism. Because if attention keeps moving toward resonance instead of record prices, it changes the game. It gives more artists space to build on their own terms, not just wait for the stamp of approval from above. And it gives collectors a chance to shape collections that aren’t just trophies, but stories.

I’m not saying there aren’t risks. When big galleries circle the “emerging space,” it can warp a career before it’s had time to find its own shape. Burnout is real. But if you look at the trend line, the message is clear: the future of the art market isn’t at the very top. It’s in the conviction of artists working right now, often at prices still within reach, often outside the spotlight.

So when I see sales dip 6% globally but  the smallest galleries climb by double digits, I don’t see a contradiction. I see a correction. I see proof of what artists already know: the edges have never been edges at all.

Emerging isn’t a side note. It’s the story. And if the art world wants to know where it’s headed, it should stop staring at the shrinking peak and start paying attention to the ground under its feet.
