The West Coast plays host to many hidden gems in the art world. Typically, when one thinks of galleries, New York, Paris, and London come to mind. But what about the Left Coast? The region is home to countless unique and innovative galleries showcasing art of the past, present, and future. San Francisco, in particular, stands out as an unexpected hub for creativity—an alternative yet sophisticated sibling to New York’s gallery scene.

We’ve compiled a selection of galleries in San Francisco, from up and coming spaces to more established institutions. As someone who has lived in the city for five years, I have yet to discover all of the wonderful art spread throughout the city. That being said, this list just hits the surface of what The Bay has to offer. Whether you’re looking to add to your collection or simply explore great art, these galleries are an excellent place to start your San Francisco art journey.


#### Jessica Silverman
[Jessica Silverman](https://jessicasilvermangallery.com/) has become a staple in the San Francisco Gallery scene. Founded in 2008, the gallery focuses on building artist’s careers as well as helping collectors build their dream collections. Jessica Silverman has made a name for themselves by being regulars at various
fairs, including Art Basel Miami Beach, Frieze Fair, and FOG Art + Design. The art expands across mediums, from painting to sculpture, with pieces that catch your eye the minute you move past. Representing artists such as Judy Chicago, Isaac Julien, and many more, it’s no
wonder Jessica Silverman has carved out a space in San Francisco as a gallery to remember.

#### Col Gallery
A newer space in the city, COL Gallery is a project-based contemporary art gallery founded in 2023 by Callie Jones and Julia Li. The gallery features a dynamic mix of emerging and established artists, including Janet Alling, Susan Weil, Becca Fuhrman, and others. Currently on
view through the end of the month, Francisco Moreno: Squirrel Show offers a whimsical series of paintings by the artist. Though new, COL Gallery has quickly established itself as a must see stop on the San Francisco gallery circuit. Plus, their view of the Bay near Ghiradelli Square makes for a great afternoon.

#### CULT Aimee Friberg
Known for its experimental and conceptually driven exhibitions, CULT / Aimee Friberg is a contemporary art gallery that has built a strong presence in the Bay Area since its founding in 2013. Led by Aimee Friberg, the gallery champions inclusivity and creative freedom, supporting women and LGBTQ+ artists. Its upcoming show, Mary Fernando Conrad: Impermanence, features new works by the San Francisco based multimedia artist. I first discovered this gallery at FOG Design + Art fair, instantly drawn to them for the color and whimsy presented in the art. For those seeking a unique and thought-provoking gallery experience, CULT / Aimee Friberg is not to be missed.

#### Moth Belly Gallery
Moth Belly Gallery is an artist-owned and operated space dedicated to showcasing emerging and underrepresented artists. The gallery fosters expression through visual art, writing, and performance. Its upcoming exhibition, Ancestral Download by Rayos Magos (October–November 2025), explores U.S.–Mexican cultural themes and ancestral symbolism.
Moth Belly also partners with SF First Thursdays, a free monthly local art event. This intimate and vibrant space is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience San Francisco’s independent art scene.

#### Dolby Chadwick Gallery
Dolby Chadwick Gallery, established in 1997, is a long-standing pillar of the Bay Area art community. The gallery represents a diverse roster of modern and contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media. In addition to participating in major
art fairs, Dolby Chadwick maintains a strong exhibition program, currently featuring new works by Ann Gale. With its rich history and consistently strong programming, Dolby Chadwick remains one of San Francisco’s most respected contemporary galleries.

This is just a small sampling of the gallery scene in San Francisco and the Bay Area. The region is home to many different spots, all with a unique roster of artists. While New York and London may be the heavy hitters, San Francisco comes in swinging, having more and more collectors eyeing the West. With the tech boom still on the rise, there are lots of opportunities for new collectors to take shape and the SF galleries are there to provide plenty of options. While there are so many more places worth mentioning, these five are a great jumping off point to get started with while exploring the San Francisco gallery scene.
