#### **The State of Being an Artist**

In an ideal world, artists could spend their days in their studios with their only challenges confined to the process of artmaking. However, due to changes in the current art market, we find ourselves taking on new responsibilities and more business-related tasks than ever before - especially if we want to make a living from our art.

As artists, our most important focus is creating great art. But now, if we want to be successful at selling our art,  we also have to invest time and effort in developing a personal brand, marketing, networking, and expanding our collector base. Amidst this evolving landscape, we must continuously grow our artistic abilities, explore new techniques, and dedicate hours to physical work in the studio.

While galleries and open calls present opportunities, their traditional brick-and-mortar settings and reliance on foot traffic may not be sufficient to create financially sustainable careers for many of us.  Cohart aims to create an all-inclusive space online where artists can create an entire art community of fans and collectors globally and get the support they need when it comes to selling their art. 


#### Resources and actionable steps to start building and growing your online presence

##### Social Media:

Platforms like Instagram, Threads, and Pinterest are valuable resources for building your art business and connecting with potential collectors interested in your work. ##### Content Tips:

1. Post consistently and at least three times a week on social media. Use the analytics tool to gauge response and to help you find the best times and days to post to get the most interactions.

2. Show the world your process to create exciting content. Everyone loves to see an artist working. Set up a tripod and camera (an iPhone works fine), ensure good lighting (we will share more in another blog), and record your painting process. Even a short 10-second clip with trending audio can make an engaging Reel.

3. Give a studio tour or create a Reel to share your creative space. Collectors love to see where artists work.

4. Present your artwork in a setting to help potential buyers visualize your art in their space.  You can use apps like Mid Journey to create an ideal and unique interior space for your painting and then add your artwork using Photoshop.

5. Create a video discussing your artistic inspiration or process to give your audience a deeper understanding of your work.

6. Host a Q&A session and answer frequently asked questions from your followers.

##### Learning Tools:

There are thousands of artists online, so you must continually expand your skills to stay competitive in the market. You can use tools like Canva and CapCut to create engaging content that promotes your art. Online resources, such as YouTube tutorials, provide valuable guidance on maximizing the potential of these tools. Something else I like to use is from Topaz Labs called GigaPixel AI. It could help you sharpen and enlarge photos you have already taken that may have been smaller or not very sharp.  The more you know, the better equipped you'll be to succeed as a professional artist.  

Embracing new ideas and technology can empower artists to help grow their online presence, put their best foot forward, and reach a broader audience.
