This year’s Affordable Art Fair brought its signature energy to a new setting - the Starrett-Lehigh Building in Chelsea. With lines wrapped around the block yet again, the move gave the fair a fresh backdrop, and the aisles quickly filled with the familiar in-person buzz: art lovers studying works, lively conversations, and crowds circling for a final look. At the same time, there was an equally present digital rhythm. Collectors were pulling out their phones mid-conversation, scanning QR codes, and flipping through digital portfolios right there on the floor. The fair still thrived as a space of physical discovery, yet the screen has clearly become part of the sales floor.

For exhibitors, that duality isn’t optional anymore - it’s survival. Sure, works flew off the walls, the wrapping station had a continuously long line. Galleries had to restock the art and there were hundreds of red dots all over the fair. Yet, at the same time collectors now expect access that extends beyond the booth. They want the first spark of discovery in person, but for those who don’t buy on the spot, they also want to follow up on their own time, browse inventory digitally, and make decisions without pressure. In that sense, the fair serves as the catalyst: the place where discovery begins and the experience of seeing art live remains unmatched. But often the next stage happens online.

This isn’t just a hypothetical shift. Having shown at the Affordable Art Fair for many years with different galleries, I’ve seen firsthand how the follow-up often stretches well beyond the fair itself. In the last three editions alone, I’ve had collectors from the fair reach out to my galleries for commissions weeks after the booths were packed up. That post-fair activity underscores the reality: the booth is just the wonderful beginning of new relationships, growth runs through digital connections and sustained engagement.

The middle market is where pressure is sharpest. Rents, staffing, insurance, shipping, the list of overhead costs grows longer every year, while collectors are increasingly comfortable buying directly from a screen. The pandemic accelerated the shift, but it didn’t invent it. What fairs like the Affordable Art Fair now reveal is a model in which physical presence and digital fluency work in tandem.

For collectors, this hybrid expectation has become almost invisible. Scanning a QR code or clicking into a digital portfolio feels as natural as asking a gallerist for a price sheet. For galleries, however, it represents a structural change: discovery and relationship-building may still begin in the booth, but repeat sales now rely on having an accessible digital infrastructure ready to support them. The middle market galleries that thrive are not choosing between one or the other, they’ve learned to operate seamlessly across both.

Fairs remain powerful engines of discovery. They compress thousands of encounters into a few days, giving galleries worldwide the chance to meet new collectors, test reactions to new work, and build visibility beyond their usual geography. But the fair’s real value is not only in the art that sells on-site, it’s in the network of leads that can be nurtured afterward.

I watched collectors at Affordable Art Fair engage with booths in two stages: first by stepping in and talking, then by snapping a QR code or saving a portfolio link to revisit later. Most galleries leave with hundreds of new contacts from a single weekend. That kind of immediate list-building used to take months of dinners and gallery nights.

Once those contacts are in hand, digital follow-up becomes the critical next step. A clean, mobile-ready portfolio or viewing room is now as essential as a well-lit wall. Collectors want to revisit works later, share them with a partner, or compare options side by side - all from their own screen.

Seamless back-end tools like invoicing and shipping have also become part of the collector experience. A potential buyer who sees a piece in Chelsea might finalize the purchase from Boston or Berlin, and the gallery’s ability to provide professional, seamless digital steps makes the difference between a sale and a lost lead. For galleries that master this, the “second booth” - the one that lives online - never closes. I saw it myself: digital traffic surged during and after the fair, a clear sign that in-person discovery was translating into online engagement and new commissions.

The gallery becomes both host and hub, meeting collectors where they are while building systems that keep them engaged long after the booth lights dim. The mindset shift is clear: fairs continue to be the spark, the place where energy, discovery, and relationships begin. Digital tools then carry that momentum forward, turning first encounters into lasting connections. For independent galleries navigating today’s pressures, this hybrid fluency isn’t a side project. It’s become the business model.

The Affordable Art Fair’s move to Starrett-Lehigh this year felt symbolic. The building, long home to creative studios and fashion showrooms, is itself a hybrid space: industrial, flexible, open to reinvention. The next generation of mid-market galleries isn’t choosing between physical or digital. It’s fluent in both. The fair is where relationships are sparked and momentum begins, and digital follow-up ensures that energy continues well beyond the booth. Together, they create a cycle of discovery and connection that keeps collectors engaged and coming back for more.
