Michael reminded us that a great photograph is about clarity, intention, and care. Whether you're using a phone or a DSLR, what matters most is how you show your work in its best light—both literally and figuratively.

**Essential Photography Tips for Artists**

Master Your Lighting:
Natural light, especially from a north-facing window, is often your best friend. The key is consistency: avoid mixed lighting sources and harsh shadows when possible. This creates even, accurate color representation that showcases your work authentically.

Keep It Simple and Straight:
Use a tripod and position your artwork square to the camera to avoid distortion. A simple white or neutral background can help the work stand out without competing for attention. These basics make a dramatic difference in the final result.

Edit With Purpose, Not Excess:
Light touch-ups for brightness and color correction are helpful, but accuracy matters most. Don't over-edit your images—your collector should receive exactly what they see online. Think of editing as enhancement, not transformation.

Style With Intention:
For lifestyle or social content, add context like a wall, studio shot, or styled interior, but never let it distract from the work itself. The artwork should always be the star of the show.

Know Your Output Goals:
Photograph differently depending on your end goal. Social media, website galleries, print materials, and juried show submissions may all require different formats and file sizes. Plan ahead for how you'll use each image.

Control Reflections Like a Pro:
For glossy works or pieces behind glass, angle your lights strategically or use a polarizing filter to cut glare. This small adjustment can save hours of post-processing headaches.
