Known for her expansive works utilizing vivid colors and surrealist shock factor to immediately capture your attention, the [Cohart Art Star](https://www.cohart.com/news/art-star-dallas-drop-launch) — who did a live painting at our [Art Star Weekend](https://www.cohart.com/news/art-star-dallas-drop-launch) celebration — is an artist who’d typically be silenced by American society as both a Nigerian immigrant and Black woman. However, the self-taught artist did the complete opposite by accessing a space historically reserved for the white, rich, and wealthy. With the help of the internet, Salami found a way to visually express herself and share her lived experiences, all while starting larger conversations about oft-ignored topics like identity, sexuality, and mental health. 

Like the Surrealists, Salami’s trajectory may be considered “unconventional,” but it won’t remain that way for long, as artists, collectors, and art lovers continue to learn from each other. ##### First things first, how would you describe your style? What are some themes or motifs that you’re particularly interested in exploring through your work?
 
My style is rooted in surrealism, a medium that allows me to explore complex narratives through dreamlike, symbolic imagery. I focus on themes that intersect deeply with personal and collective identity, such as race, sexuality, religion, and the impact of societal structures like white supremacy, patriarchy, and capitalism. These themes are not just motifs in my work; they are critical reflections of the world we live in. My aim is to create art that challenges viewers to confront these realities while also providing a space for introspection and dialogue.

##### Cohart and initiatives like the Digital Art Star drop are about making art accessible. Have you noticed a difference in the way people think about “collecting” art?
 
Yes, there’s been a significant shift in the art world, particularly in how people approach collecting. Today’s collectors are more interested in acquiring art that speaks to them personally rather than simply following trends for future value appreciation. This shift is particularly evident among millennials and older Gen Z, who are bringing fresh perspectives and diverse tastes to the market. This evolution in collecting is perfectly aligned with Cohart’s mission to make art more accessible and to foster genuine connections between artists and collectors. In times when the market is challenging, it's these real art enthusiasts who remain, continuing to support artists and the art they truly love.

##### Do you think the internet has changed people’s perception of the art world? Do you think it’s been for the better or worse?
 
The internet has fundamentally transformed the art world, democratizing access and providing artists with unprecedented opportunities. My career is a direct result of this democratization — without platforms like Instagram or YouTube, I wouldn’t have had the same access to art education or the ability to connect with a global community of artists and collectors. While there is often resistance to new technologies within the art world, I believe that those who embrace these changes like Cohart, are positioning themselves as the new pioneers. As the digital space becomes more saturated with bots, A.I.-generated content, and divisive rhetoric, I foresee a growing desire for authentic, community-driven spaces. Cohart is perfectly poised to be that refuge, where art and genuine connections can flourish.
 
##### What are the benefits of Cohart also being a social hub for art lovers, rather than only an “e-commerce” site akin to Etsy?
 
In today’s increasingly chaotic digital landscape, where misinformation and commercial noise are rampant, the importance of having dedicated online communities cannot be overstated. Cohart offers something truly valuable — a social hub where art lovers can connect with artists on a deeper level, beyond just transactions. This is not just another marketplace; it’s a platform that fosters real, meaningful interactions, creating a space where art can be appreciated in its full context, and where relationships between artists and collectors can thrive.

##### How important would you say the community aspect is to the Cohart experience? And, on a related note, do you think it’s still important for platforms like Cohart to have a real-world presence?

The community aspect is central to the Cohart experience. As the internet continues to grow more unbridled, with its myriad of distractions and challenges, the need for focused, supportive online communities becomes even more critical. However, while online engagement is essential, the physical, in-person experience of art remains irreplaceable. There’s something unique about experiencing art in person — the scale, texture, and presence of the work are vital to fully appreciating it. This is why I believe that platforms like Cohart must continue to maintain a real-world presence, allowing their community to experience art in its most powerful form.

##### What was your favorite part about the All Stars Weekend? Was the experience of participating in this “online” community in-person part of the excitement?
 
One of my favorite parts of the All Stars Weekend was the opportunity to paint live, sharing my creative process in real-time with the art lovers and collectors who attended. The energy of creating in front of an audience and seeing their immediate reactions was incredibly inspiring. It was also amazing to meet several of my online followers in person for the first time—there’s something so special about bridging the gap between digital interactions and real-world connections. This experience truly highlighted the importance of Cohart’s community aspect, both online and offline.
 
##### The Art Star Weekend is about a lot more than just selling pieces; it’s also about fostering an entire community of artists, collectors, and art lovers. How do you feel about Cohart being a hub for connection, instead of acting as another marketplace?
 
Cohart is doing something essential by bridging a necessary gap in the art world. It’s not just about selling art; it’s about creating a community where artists, collectors, and art lovers can connect and grow together. With platforms like Instagram becoming less reliable for artists due to recent changes, there’s a clear need for a new space that offers more value. Cohart is stepping into this role beautifully, providing not just a marketplace, but a vibrant, supportive community where art can be appreciated, discussed, and cherished.
