**[Vasco](https://www.cohart.com/vasco/profile)** is a Mexican-born artist based in Los Angeles, California, whose work bridges the landscapes of his homeland with the emotional resonance of longing and belonging. Primarily working with acrylic, oil, and found objects, he incorporates unconventional materials like cement, paper plates, and even blueberries to craft layered compositions. Vasco views art as a shared story, emphasizing the importance of community and diversity in artistic expression. His creative process is deeply intuitive, guided by personal reflection and spiritual inspiration, with each piece capturing a sense of home and connection.

##### Can you walk us through your creative process? Which materials and techniques have become integral to your work?

I'm inspired by what I can't have. The breeze and jungle of my beautiful Mexico. She yearns for me and I for her. I use materials and colors that remind me of her landscapes. Acrylic, cement and drawing utensils are my preferred tools.

##### What emotions or responses do you hope viewers experience when engaging with your art?

A deep longing for a feeling of home.


##### How do you approach starting a new piece of artwork? Is there a particular routine or mindset that helps you begin?

Everything arises from a need to say something. When the holy spirit of God touches my heart, I know when the time is right.

##### How do you handle moments of doubt or insecurity about your work?

I allow them to be there, and observe them to be passing experiences that do not define me.


##### Do you envision your artistic journey evolving in the coming years?

Yes, it is part of the artist’s journey to shed what has once been useful in the expression of the joy and suffering we hold. The painting lets me know when she has wings.

##### Does being part of an artistic community impact your work or connection to the art world?

Without community, our stories would echo through empty hearts.


##### Have any social expectations or family influences shaped or challenged your identity as an artist?

My family is everything. What I conquer in me, I do for them. My expression is an appreciation of what I hold dear; both the ugly and beautiful.

##### What’s the most unconventional material or technique you’ve experimented with in your art?

I love using found objects. Things like paper plates, a sort of collage. I’ve made drawings using blueberries or branches dipped in ink.

##### If you could change one aspect of the art world to better support artists, what would it be, and why?

To push for the diversity in an artist’s arsenal. Pressured repetition is not hot.
