##### What inspired you to become an artist, and how did you start your journey?

Becoming an artist was never a choice. Not in the conventional sense of deciding on a profession, like choosing to be a teacher, lawyer, or baker. I am an artist—I affirm and declare this identity as my own.

My artistic journey is ongoing, a continuous process of evolution. During my childhood, I discovered the wonder of creativity—a magical experience that was tragically silenced. In primary school, I had a teacher who was severely and psychologically scarred by the social challenges of post-April 25, 1974 Portugal. The frustrations he vented violently on his students repressed my fascination with art, as seen through a child’s eyes.

Years later, I entered a period of exploration, considering different paths in life. All of them were valid, yet none felt truly fulfilling. It was not until my forties, in a more mature phase of life, that I reconnected with art. Like everything in life, it happened at the right time, and it was perfect.
From simple graphite sketches, I embarked on a journey that led to creating works now sent to the far corners of the globe. This trajectory, filled with challenges and triumphs, is far more than a profession; it is a living dream. I live the dream of being an artist, every single day.

##### What is your favorite medium to work with, and why does it resonate with you?

Visual arts are undoubtedly my favorite form of expression. In time, sculpture may play an important role in my artistic career, but for now, painting and drawing are where I express myself most fluidly and organically. Everything flows effortlessly; my creative process is deeply intuitive and personal.

##### What role does research play in your artistic process? Do you have a specific method for gathering inspiration?

For me, everything becomes research and exploration. Curiosity and restlessness are qualities that an artist simply cannot escape—they are the fuel for creativity. I see the artist as the great scientist of the human soul, someone who dares to seek and uncover what others cannot see, where it lies, or even what it truly is.

Inspiration often finds me in unexpected ways. I rarely know where, how, or why it appears—it feels like a natural byproduct of this constant state of inner restlessness. This process is intuitive and deeply personal. As an artist, I embody this quest. I am the discoverer, the explorer, and ultimately, the artist.

##### How has your artistic vision evolved over time, and where do you see it heading in the future?

I feel deeply confident about my artistic practice, yet I’m also aware that the world is in constant flux, changing at an extraordinary pace. This brings a sense of restlessness, which I embrace as a positive force—it keeps me alert and engaged with the present.

New technologies are reshaping our reality every day, and the art world is no exception. We, as artists, must evolve alongside these changes. Art is an open concept—it cannot be confined to a single theory, technique, style, or movement. It is far too profound, intangible, and, ultimately, spiritual.

I see my artistic vision continuing to adapt to these shifting landscapes while remaining true to its essence. Art, after all, resides within each of us, and as long as I remain connected to that inner source, my work will continue to grow and resonate.

##### How do you stay motivated and inspired during creative blocks or challenging times?

I draw a lot of emotion and reflection from walks in nature; it’s how I nurture my unconscious mind. I believe that connecting with the natural world helps unlock creativity and brings clarity during uncertain times. Additionally, I see these challenging periods as opportunities for great accomplishments and meaningful changes, both on a personal level and within the larger social and cultural context.

Art is always at the genesis of such transformations, and I believe the artist plays an integral role in this process. So, even during difficult moments, I stay motivated by remembering that my artistic practice can contribute to broader reflections and changes, engaging in dialogue with the world around me.

##### How do you balance commercial aspects of being an artist with your creative vision?

This is always one of the most challenging aspects, as it feels almost unnatural for a visual artist to divide time and attention toward something that doesn’t captivate in the same way as the artistic creation itself. However, it’s an integral part of personal and professional growth. Modernity has brought this dual role to the artist, and adapting to it has become increasingly necessary.

Organizations like Cohart have been doing remarkable work in providing tools to help ease this transition into the economic side of an artistic career. These kinds of resources make it more manageable to maintain a balance, allowing artists to focus on their creative vision while also embracing the realities of sustaining a career.

##### Does technology play a role in your art-making process?

Not much, to be honest. In the execution of my work, I continue to rely on my hands and traditional tools like brushes and palette knives, as well as some less conventional ones like sponges and tubes. However, I’m not opposed to technology. Everything has its right time, and if the need arises to incorporate a specific type of technology into my process, I would do so without hesitation.

##### Are there any upcoming projects that you're particularly excited about (ex. a new artwork, a show, a creative project)?

Yes, I’ve recently started a new series of works on canvas called _Sintonias_, which has been occupying most of my time. I’m also working on a large-scale oil painting on canvas that has been an absolute joy to create.

In terms of exhibitions, I’m already preparing for a group show at _Galeria Santa Maria Maior_ in Lisbon, following the conclusion of my show in Setúbal. Additionally, I have three solo exhibitions scheduled for 2025, which I’m very excited about. These exhibitions will showcase different facets of my work and allow me to connect with collectors and audiences in new ways.

2025 promises to be a year filled with hard work, creativity, and opportunities, and I’m looking forward to what it will bring.

##### How do you approach the concept of success or failure in your art practice?

On one hand, if I measure success by the immense pleasure I get from making art or the emotional catharsis I’ve experienced over the years through my artistic work, then it has been incredible. But on the other hand, every artist seeks external recognition to some extent—that’s part of what we aspire to achieve through our work.

In that sense, there are highs and lows. It’s about finding the right balance between what you project and aspire to, and living intensely, with soul and passion, in what you create. For me, success is not just about external validation but also about staying true to the essence of my practice and finding joy in the process.

##### What advice would you give to emerging artists or other artist peers trying to find their voice in the art world?

Seek your essence through art and use it as a vehicle for self-transformation. Avoid using art as a means to inflate the ego, as that can quickly become futile and uninteresting. Be original and courageous—always believe in yourself and your vision. Authenticity and passion are what make art truly resonate with others. Thank you.
