[Jennifer Caviola ](https://www.cohart.com/jenni243407/profile) received her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York in 2002 and her MFA from Parsons in New York City in 2007. She has had solo shows in New York City, Brooklyn, and California and has participated in group shows throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East. She has been featured in publications such as Vogue, Cultured Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Complex Magazine, Papermag, Juxtapoz and High Fructose.

She has been a visiting art instructor and art educational speaker for over 15 years at institutions such as The Brant Foundation, The Aldrich Museum, Parsons the New School for Design, Greenwich Public Middle Schools, Long Island University and Side by Side Charter School.

#### Tell us about yourself and your artistic journey


I’m a lifelong painter. I feel it in my bones, that’s what I am. I studied painting at Pratt for my undergraduate and then at Parsons for graduate school. 


#### What first drew you to making art?

My grandmother was a painter and started teaching me how to paint in her studio when I was 9.  I’ve been making paintings ever since.

#### What inspires your work, and where do you find your ideas?
Seashells and crystals and gardens and heartbreak and struggle and grief and time and memory. 

#### What makes your artistic approach unique? 
I don’t think my approach is unique. I think I’m an artist among artists. I have the calling, and I make the work. It’s simple in that way.

#### What does a typical day in your studio look like?

I wake up around 5 am and make myself some coffee, and then head to my home studio upstairs. I’ve always loved a home-based studio because I can make work wherever the time allows. Easy access to studio time is vital for my practice.  I work until my daughter wakes up, and then I’ll go back downstairs and ready myself for work and her for school.

#### How has your artistic voice evolved since you started creating?

I’ve become better technically with time and practice. Cleaner lines, more precise compositions, and more complex color choices. 



#### What role does experimentation play in your practice?

I’m constantly playing with color pairings as well as the dynamic placement of these moving square forms that my work currently focuses on.

#### How does your cultural background or life experiences influence your work?


I’m sober 12 years, and it’s not easy because you feel everything, including the grief that comes naturally with living.  I try to funnel that grief into working, and I’ve found it to be pretty effective. 






#### What's the most challenging part of being an artist? 

Honestly? Loving making paintings that don’t necessarily sell right away. It’s a reality. But you keep going. You have to. 




#### What do you hope people feel or think when they see your work?
Excitement for painting and color and form and abstraction and surface and process. 




#### What advice would you give to someone just starting their artistic journey?  
Prepare for disappointments and don’t let it stop you from making the work you need to be making. 

####  What excites you most about where your art is headed?
The paintings are constantly evolving, which pulls me forward. The evolution resembles hope that could possibly spill into other areas of my life.
