As a Black-Hispanic artist who is also ex-US military and now living in Germany, [Berto Herrera](https://www.cohart.com/u/bertoherrera) brings his unique perspective into his work. From his first exhibition in 2006 to the present, all of Herrera’s work has centered around dismantling and examining the subtle cultural biases in which we operate.

##### Can you describe your artistic process? What materials and techniques do you typically use?

My creative process begins with extensive research into the subject matter, particularly focused on the intersections of the surveillance and military-industrial complex. I immerse myself in various sources—books, articles, blogs, and even commentaries—to develop a holistic understanding. This information is then cross-referenced and mapped to draw connections to broader societal implications. My work reflects the interconnectedness of these ideas, ensuring that both visual and auditory elements are conceptually aligned.

Materials play a critical role in my practice. While I started as a painter, I view that as one of many tools in my repertoire. My work often incorporates decommissioned military technologies, such as using infrared photography with Kodak Aerochrome, originally designed for reconnaissance during the Vietnam War. By repurposing these materials, I reclaim their historical contexts to comment on systems of power and control. For instance, in my What Is Home series, I use this technology to explore themes of displacement and trauma.

##### What message or emotion do you hope to convey through your art?

At its core, my art examines the deterioration of truth in a post-truth society, using the image—a medium once considered irrefutable evidence—as the central focus. My goal is to challenge viewers to question the systems of surveillance and control that shape modern existence, encouraging a deeper reflection on the invisible forces that govern our lives.

My art engages with complex themes, deliberately unsettling viewers in a way that encourages them to dig deeper into their own lives, beliefs, and assumptions. This process of confrontation is integral to my practice, as I believe art should inspire critical thought and self-reflection.

My work is designed to initiate a more profound dialogue. The beauty and refinement in the visuals serve to “bait” the viewer into deeper contemplation, encouraging them to question not only the artwork but the societal forces and personal narratives that shape their perception.

I see art as a means of disruption, compelling audiences to reconsider the truths they may take for granted. Through carefully curated aesthetics and intentional conceptual layering, I strive to create a space for reflection—one where people are invited to confront their own biases and challenge the systems that govern their lives. Ultimately, my work seeks to connect the individual experience with larger societal issues, making art not just a form of expression, but a tool for understanding and transformation.

##### What role does spontaneity versus planning play in your creative process?

In my artistic practice, spontaneity serves as a catalyst for exploration, often emerging from a subconscious space rather than a premeditated plan. This inherent unpredictability makes articulating my process a complex endeavor, as the essence of chance often eludes verbalization. I am drawn to the concept of chance, particularly its historical connections to the Dadaist movement, and I intend to delve deeper into this aspect of my work. Influenced by luminaries like Ellsworth Kelly and John Cage, I seek to unravel the interplay between randomness and intentionality, examining how these elements shape both my creative output and the audience's experience.

In an era dominated by meticulously curated images and predetermined narratives, embracing chance allows for a more authentic engagement with art.

##### Can you discuss a piece that challenged you both technically and conceptually?

This latest body of work, tentatively titled _CAPTCHA_, serves as a critical exploration of surveillance and systems of power. As I delve deeper into this complex topic, I aim to uncover its multifaceted nature, examining the various faces it presents in contemporary society. The main video piece poses significant challenges, both creatively and logistically, as it requires outdoor filming involving fire and the elements. With only two opportunities to execute the project, the stakes are high.

In pursuing this work, I have proactively sought legal counsel to navigate the intricate legal landscape surrounding my subject matter. Understanding the risks involved is paramount, particularly regarding the potential for legal repercussions in the U.S. Through this process, I am not merely documenting a concept but engaging in a dialogue with the audience about the implications of surveillance.

##### Can you share a specific project or piece that holds special significance for you? Why is it important?

As I reflect on my body of work titled _What Is Home_, it represents a pivotal moment in my artistic journey, transitioning from my role as a design director in the sports industry to fully embracing being a full-time artist. This transformation was not just a career change; it occurred during a time of profound societal upheaval, marked by the COVID-19 lockdowns and the civil unrest following George Floyd’s murder.

Collaborating with Carrie Scott to launch this body of work amidst gallery closures underscored the challenges artists face in times of crisis. The concept of "home" became particularly resonant during this period, as many of us grappled with our sense of belonging and the spaces we inhabit.

##### How important is the exhibition space to the presentation of your work? Do you adapt your pieces for different venues or spaces?

The significance of exhibition spaces—whether digital or physical—cannot be overstated in the context of contemporary art. Without dedicated spaces for community engagement, artistic endeavors risk devolving into mere commercial transactions. While art and commerce have been intertwined throughout history, it is the ability of these spaces to foster genuine discourse that underpins my work.

I believe that each exhibition should be thoughtfully tailored to its environment. In my practice, I often create new works specifically designed for particular spaces, allowing for a deeper connection between the art and its surroundings. This is why I prioritize early collaboration with galleries; understanding their architectural nuances through detailed drawings and personal visits is essential. Being present in a space not only helps me gauge its vibe but also informs my choices about what fits.

To further ensure alignment, I frequently attend exhibitions at various galleries to immerse myself in their programming and curatorial approach. This ongoing engagement allows me to discern how my work can meaningfully interact with existing themes and dialogues, ensuring that my contributions resonate with the community I aim to engage. Ultimately, the relationship between art and space is dynamic and essential, serving as a foundation for fostering connections that transcend mere transactions.

##### What impact do you hope your art has on the community or society at large?

In an age marked by both unprecedented connectivity and profound isolation, I strive to create spaces that encourage meaningful discourse. My primary goal is to foster understanding among diverse communities, enabling individuals to engage thoughtfully with the systems that shape our lives.

As our society becomes increasingly interconnected, the risk of disconnection looms larger. It is my belief that art can serve as a vital conduit for dialogue, providing a platform where voices from all walks of life can come together. By facilitating these conversations, I aim to illuminate the complexities of our shared experiences and the nuanced realities we navigate daily.

Through my work, I seek to challenge perceptions, invite critical thinking, and ultimately inspire action. ##### How do you handle criticism or feedback on your work?

In the corporate environment, I quickly learned that feedback and constructive criticism are invaluable; developing a thick skin is essential for delivering quality work on time outside of your emotions. I prioritize listening to feedback from those I respect—individuals whose opinions I value deeply, whether they are trusted collaborators or mentors.

A pivotal moment in my journey occurred when I read an interview with painter Jonas Wood in Artnet titled, "I Was So Afraid for Way Too Long." His reflections on navigating immense market success resonated with me and reinforced lessons I had internalized in the corporate setting. Wood's candid discussion about the fears and pressures of artistic visibility prompted me to consider my own experiences and the importance of resilience in the creative field.
