### Michele Alioto: The Psychology of Mood Portraits

For artist Michele Alioto, painting is a lifelong practice rooted in curiosity about people, identity, and the stories we carry beneath the surface.

“I’ve been an artist my entire life,” Alioto says. Her creative practice has included sculpture, writing, and jewelry design, but painting has always remained her great love. Today, her work centres on figurative painting, with portraiture at the heart of her practice.

#### Looking Beneath the Surface

“I am interested in the inner world of my subjects: their vulnerabilities, complexities, resilience, and humanity,” Alioto explains.

Rather than providing a definitive answer, her portrait painting creates space for viewers to form their own connection with the subject.

## From Intimate Portraits to Dramatic Scale

Alioto’s mood portraits have evolved in both scale and presentation. Her recent 12-by-12-inch collection resonated strongly with collectors, with many choosing to purchase works in pairs or groups of four and six.

More recently, she has begun creating larger 36-by-36-inch portraits, giving the figures a more dramatic and immersive presence while maintaining the same emotional focus.

The shift in scale changes the experience of the work, but not Alioto’s central interest: understanding the individual and what exists beneath their expression.

#### Color as a Language

Color is one of the defining elements of Alioto’s **contemporary painting** practice. She explores its emotional possibilities through layering, glazing, transparent passages, palette knife work, and dry brush techniques.

“I am fascinated by the way color relationships can create tension, harmony, energy, and mood,” she says, “allowing the painting to communicate what words often cannot.”

For Alioto, color becomes part of the emotional language of the work, creating atmosphere while allowing technique and feeling to meet on the canvas.

#### Beyond the Figure

While figurative work remains her primary focus, Alioto also finds inspiration in landscapes, cityscapes, and the natural world.

“Nature has the power to ground us, teach us, and bring us closer to a sense of wonder and spirit,” she says.

Whether painting a face or a landscape, her practice is ultimately rooted in observation and connection. Her work encourages viewers to slow down, look closely, and consider their own relationship to what they see.

Her recent recognition in ArtScene Magazine, alongside the continued response from art collectors, reflects the growing reach of a practice built around these ideas.
