#### About the Exhibition

Named after the monumental centerpiece painting "Atlas Obscura" (62 x 72 inches, oil on canvas, 2024), this exhibition invites visitors into Muhs's richly atmospheric world where scale, texture, and chromatic layering create **objects of presence**—meditative, sensual, and deeply intentional. Each work is composed with oil and resin on canvas stretched over wood panel, a medium that allows for incredible depth, luminosity, and permanence.

The collection bridges painterly tradition with experimental surface treatment, reflecting Muhs's unique artistic evolution from his origins as a world champion sculptor to his current standing as an innovative painter working across multiple disciplines.

#### About the Artist

Jeff Muhs brings a distinctive perspective shaped by both his Long Island origins and decades of artistic mastery. Born in Southampton, New York in 1966, Muhs developed an intimate connection to the natural world through his father, a third-generation hunting and fishing guide. The barrier beach of Long Island's south shore continues to run as a major current throughout his work, informing both his material sensibility and atmospheric vision.

Before establishing himself as a painter, Muhs achieved recognition as a world champion sculptor, learning the exacting art of wood sculpting from his father. This traditional craft developed in him a dedication to excellence and material mastery that permeates his current practice. After earning his BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City (1984-1988), Muhs evolved into an innovative artist known for his 'Slipstream' paintings that reexamine abstract painting traditions, and his 'Dynamic Free Casting' concrete sculptures that redefine sculptural processes.

His work demonstrates a continual search for truth in pure artistic form—a philosophy that resonates powerfully in this latest collection's exploration of memory, materiality, and presence.
