The inspiration for this series comes from the Jewish mystic concept of Tsimtsum which means contraction (of the light).
I aim at balancing the light, focusing on movements and imperfections.

This piece is a part of a larger collection, titled Desire Path. This series continues my exploration of the ‘impossible bouquet’ by reinterpreting the genre popularised in 17th-century Dutch painting. Here I theatrically critique the complexity and anxieties of human experience when met with established socio-cultural systems.

This piece is a part of a larger collection, titled Desire Path. This series reflects upon a dissonance between subjective hedonic desire and modalities of pleasure in contemporary social life. 

The artwork is framed in a light teal shadow frame. 

Head to Tail 

Using clay, handmade sterling silver, 18-karat gold, cast metal, tapestry, embroidery, pigment, and paints, my intricate assemblages aim to powerfully address world injustices such as the uneven distribution of wealth and the global hunger epidemic.

Paintings of Jan Valik balance on the edge of perception where abstract and figurative becomes fluid, evoked within a spatial and pictorial ambiguity interlocked with a tension of simultaneous presence and absence to disrupt conventional binaries of perception.  

Playful Promises

This piece is an expression of layers of feeling. What was most important to me was the way that these layers interacted -- how can more weighty, intense feelings walk hand in hand with those that soothe?

Horizon of Gold

This painting is from one of my Lockdown series, Hope. This series was instrumental in my huge solo show Hope Island at Gulden Kunstverk, in January 2021. The light from the other side has begun to creep in bringing with it a sense of hope.
