Subject, 2021

My Subject series, in particular, responds to Ukraine artist Julian Savko’s Portrait of the orphan Sashko Budyak (1974). Sashko’s subtle yet complicated expression reminded me of my time in Serbia, on a short missionary trip to help children overcome challenges associated with poverty. This portrait series uses Sashko’s face as a basis, hinting at a kind of misfortune childhood through subtle changes in facial expressions. The generated images encapsulate the original painting while reinterpreting it to include my personal experience in Serbia.

“Sydney” was inspired by Van Gogh’s self-portrait at the Art Institute of Chicago. her cool, reddish flesh tones compliment the blue-green background.

I like doing portraits and when I'm painting someone I often feel I'm with them, even if they are no longer posing. It's a very personal thing. This Irishmen has beautiful coloring and a quick wit, and a bright mind. It was great fun to paint this.
