This is my cousin Gabriella on her birthday in 2019 at one of our family’s favorite secret swimming spot in the NJ Pine Barrens. There is definitely a peaceful element to this photo for me, but there’s also the question of vices, innocence lost. There’s a duality to it, I think. It’s a complex one for me, much like life. It’s been a favorite.

Spending time at the beach always instills the feeling of calmness and serenity. As a swimmer, I am always drawn to the water. The encaustic wax gives the water a sense of depth and texture. Working with Polaroid cameras lend to the dreamy and ethereal feeling.
